Naparima Girls’ High School “Hand in Hand we can sustain our land”
Naparima Girls’ High School presents ‘Hand in Hand we can sustain our land’ A hydroponic structure made by the NGHS students entirely of recycled PVC pipes. With an array of crops such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more, we aim to implement the fruit of our labour, in the preparation of food served by the NGHS’ cafeteria staff. By doing this, we can minimise the carbon emissions from the vehicular transportation from the source of food to the cafeteria each day.
ASJA Girls’ College, San Fernando “5 Days to Send CO2 Away”
Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment.
The Carbon Zero Initiative of Trinidad and Tobago, CZITT, a non profit organisation dedicated to Trinidad and Tobago becoming a carbon neutral country and a leader in sustainable practices, strongly believes that the solutions for this climate change crisis can be found in today’s classrooms. This is why the National Secondary Schools Climate Quiz was developed; to light the spark of carbon emission reduction in our twin-island Republic.
112 secondary schools entered the Preliminary Round. Only the Top 16 remain!
Now it is on to the Knock-out stages! The competition is fierce. The teams are prepped and ready.
Miracle Ministries Pentecostal High School “Moringa Carbon Sequestration”
The Environmental Club of Miracle Ministries Pentecostal High School had 6 components of their project in developing a sustainable plan to contribute towards the fight against climate change:
1. Collection and recycling of the large volume of plastic bottles that is generated at school on a daily basis.
2. Setting of over 500 moringa seedlings for planting around the school’s compound and for sale.
3. Emphasis on the health benefits and the carbon absorption value of the moringa seedlings.
4. Engaging in as much re-use of waste materials as possible to set the seedlings.
5. Investing in re-usable tote bags given free of charge to persons purchasing the seedlings and encouraging them to reduce their use of plastic bags.
6. Investing in the purchase and distribution of refillable white board markers for teachers at MMPHS in an effort to reduce the plastic waste being constantly generated when traditional markers are used up.
Naparima College
Climate change is one of the biggest crises facing humanity. Climate change is the catch-all term for the shift in worldwide weather phenomena associated with an increase in global average temperatures. Nasa defines climate change as: “A broad range of global phenomena created predominantly by burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to Earth’s atmosphere. It’s real and temperatures have been going up around the world for many decades. By careful reasoning and logic this paper sets about systematically showing that not only is climate change real but also seeks to address and analyze the ways in which climate change ca affect the environment and what we are doing to combat/alleviate this global issue.
Climate change in the world can be caused by various activities. When temperature rises, many different changes can occur on Earth.. Oceans and glaciers have also experienced some changes: oceans are warming and becoming more acidic, glaciers are melting, and sea levels are rising. As these changes frequently occur in future decades, they will likely present challenges to our society and environment. Studies have shown that 17 out of the 18 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001, annual precipitation in Trinidad and Tobago is predicted to decrease by 14% by 2050 and sea levels are rising 3.2 millimeters per year. In order to combat this global issue, Naparima College in collaboration with CZITT for the Carbon Zero Initiative, planted 1000 Moringa trees, which are the have the hugest conversion rate of Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen.
This project was promoted by the Geography Club of Naparima College and moves us one step closer in reducing the critical issue of climate change. Building on the concept of reducing, reusing, and recycling, Naparima College’s Geography Club installed multiple recycling bins around the school with each student being able to place plastics to be recycled and reused later on. As a way to implement a more ecofriendly and renewable source of energy in the school, solar panels have been installed on the roof of the library to conserve energy and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released in the atmosphere as well as the Naparima College WeTogether team in collaboration with the Geography Club on their WeGoGreen initiative built and installed a fully functional, self-sustaining aqua- phonics system to not only reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the environment but to also serve as a food source. In addition, the WeTogether team also successfully organized walkathon, WeWalkforWater, to raise awareness of the importance of water and the consequences of water shortage as well as installed and six filters on the taps providing clean water to the students and teachers of the school; reducing the need to use plastic water bottles and clean, portable water can be obtained from the taps. Over 150 persons of our school participated in this CZITT Contest.
In conclusion, we at Naparima College understand the causes and consequences of climate change and intend to do all we to help minimize the effect of this global issue. If the earth’s temperatures continue to rise in the future, living things on earth would become extinct due to the high temperatures. If humans contribute to control climate change, this world would be cooler and the high temperatures we currently have would decrease. We believe that if everybody as one take stand and try to end most of the climate changes that are occurring, this would make an impact and would be a safer place to live on.
San Fernando Central Secondary School “Plastic Bottle Recycling”
Greetings! At San Fernando Central Secondary School, we have begun our fight against climate change by recycling plastic bottles. They say that “great things have small beginnings”, and indeed our effort has come a long way. With a handful of large garbage bags, and repeated messages at assembly to inspire and encourage everyone, our school embarked on this journey to make a concerted effort to recycle.
Approximately two months later, our school received five (5) mini icare receptacles, that were immediately placed at strategic locations throughout the school. Now, with an average of 175 bottles collected daily, and a total exceeding 13,000 bottles since our inception, we are proud to say that San Fernando Central Secondary School is a beacon of recycling prowess, that is unrivalled in its commitment.
