HOW IT WORKS
PRELIMINARY ROUNDS
The Preliminary Round is held at your school. It is a paper-based test supervised by a CZITT invigilator.
PREPARE YOUR TEAM
- Team size: a minimum of 20 students. Schools with more than 20 interested students may enter up to 30 students.
- The Test: each student answers 30 multiple-choice questions in 20 minutes. Answers are shaded on a separate answer sheet, so students should bring a dark pencil (HB or 2B) and an eraser.
- Marking: +1 mark for each correct answer, −0.25 marks for each incorrect answer and 0 for a question left unanswered. Shading more than one answer for a question counts as incorrect.
- The ranking: your school’s score is the marks of all students, plus any bonus marks, divided by 20 or by the number of students who sat the test, whichever is larger. A team of fewer than 20 students is therefore still divided by 20, so schools should enter at least 20 students.
- The Finals: the top 16 schools advance to the Knock-Out Finals. Schools with equal scores share a place; if schools tied at 16th place would take the number above 16, those schools compete in a play-off.
BONUS POINT STRUCTURE
Earn extra marks for your team by including students from the lower school and students who do not study sciences or Geography:
- 5 bonus marks for each student in Forms 1 to 3.
- 5 bonus marks for each student in Form 3 or above who does not study any science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agricultural Science, Integrated/General Science or Environmental Science) or Geography.
- A maximum of 10 students in each bonus category counts for each school. A Form 3 student who studies no science subject or Geography qualifies in both categories.
ON THE DAY
Before the test, the invigilator records each student’s name, form, age, gender and subjects on the
CZITT invigilator sheet, and these details are checked against the answer sheets. Teachers are asked
to make sure this information is accurate, as it determines the bonus marks.
